The beautiful landscape combined with the harmonic blend of the Castle, Oldtown, and the river amid mountains makes Heidelberg one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Heidelberg is home to the oldest University in Germany (1386) and the town has a rich history dating back over 800 years. Year after year, millions of tourists become enchanted by the "myth of Heidelberg." Heidelberg is on the temporary list of the World Cultural Inheritance list distributed by UNESCO.

Heidelberg is an important center of modern scientific research and development, economic development, and the home of the Rhine-Neckar-triangle. Openness and an international-feel are trademarks of the town at the Neckar, which has partner cities throughout the world.

Heidelberg is subdivided into 14 neighborhoods. Some neighborhoods, Handschuhsheim and Neuenheim, are older than the "actual" Heidelberg itself. However all have one thing in common; every part has its own history, interwoven with that of Heidelberg. Many cultural and historical markers and green courtyards make the Weststadt (West-town) one of the prettiest sections of Heidelberg. After the closing of the only Industrial park, a Wagon factory, Weststadt is now an entirely residential area. Since 1907 it has retained its unique style: the Landhausschule (1886), the St. Josef Krankenhaus built after the design of E. Krause (1988); and the catholic St. Bonifatius Church, built in the new-roman style, with colorful ceiling frescos (1898/1903); and the Lutheran Christus Church built after the plans of Baurat Herman Behagel (1902/1903).
